Description This artwork by Ito Jakuchu (1716-1800), who was active in Kyoto in the mid-Edo period. It is kept at the Yoshizawa Memorial Sano City Museum of Art.
Jakuchu Ito is known to have produced flower-and-bird paintings in dark colors depicting chickens and other animals, ink paintings with an aloof expression, and prints, and his works from Rokuonji Temple in Kyoto and Saifukuji Temple in Osaka are designated as national important cultural properties.
The first half of the work, entitled "Saichu-fu" (Compendium of Vegetables and Insects) , is a series of backgroundless paintings of vegetables and fruits, while the second half depicts various insects, reptiles, amphibians, and other creatures. The motifs covered in this work total approximately 160 species. At the end of the book, there is an inscription by Jakuchu Ito, 77 years old.
Jakuchu rarely painted in the style of scrolls, and this is the only example of his work in full-scale color on silk, which makes it very valuable. It is also a clear reference work of the period of its production, showing the style of Jakuchu's later years.
