Description Wooden, painted, and with a gemstone eye. This is a statue of Kouhou Kennichi (1241-1316), founder of Ungan-ji Temple. It is enshrined in Unganji, a Zen temple of the Myoshinji school of the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism.
He was the son of Emperor Gosaga and served as the abbot of Kencho-ji Temple and other temples in Kamakura, and his students included such brilliant scholars as Muso Soseki. He was posthumously called Bukkoku kokushi (Buddhist priest).
It is thought that this statue was made during his lifetime (juzo), but while the statue at Shoutou-in Temple in Kanagawa (designated as a national important cultural property), built in 1315, the year before Kouhou Kennichi's death, shows him in his later years, this statue shows him in a younger age, and it is highly possible that its production date goes further back.
The head skeleton has subtle undulations and a lively expression, as if it were a direct copy of the statue's owner. It can be evaluated as a masterpiece of portrait sculpture.
