| Description | This book is said to have been dedicated to the deity of Toshogu Shrine by Tokugawa Iemitsu's nanny, Kasuga-no-tsubone. In the dedication, Iemitsu not only acknowledges the fact that he became the third shogun of the Tokugawa family, but also that he was cured of several illnesses and that the construction of Edo Castle was successfully completed, all thanks to the protection of Toshogongen, and prays for the unlimited happiness of the shogun family. It is believed to be a draft of a congratulatory message written by the bureau itself. It is believed that Kasuga-no-tsubone herself wrote the text in 1640, and on her way back to Kyoto, she climbed Mount Nikko, so it is likely that she read it in front of the Toshogu Shrine and presented it to the shrine. At the time, Kasuga-no-tsubone was 62 years old. She was married to Masanari Inaba, who gave birth to Masakatsu and Masatoshi, and then separated from him. She became a nanny when Iemitsu was born in 1620. She was highly trusted by Iemitsu for her efforts in succeeding to the shogunate, and was later given the title of Kasuga-no-Tsubone. She died in September 1643 at the age of 65. |
