Description Rinnoji Temple was founded by Shodo Shonin in 766 (Tenpyo Jingo 2) and was originally called Shihonryuji Temple. In the Edo period (1603-1868), the temple was renamed Rinnoji Temple by the imperial edict of Emperor Gomizuno.

The main hall of Rinnoji Temple and the Sorinto were moved to the present location in 1879. The main hall retains the old style of Tendai esoteric Buddhism, with the inner and outer halls divided into a wooden floor and an earthen floor, and the inner hall's shumidan is the same height as the outer hall's floor.
