Description | National Designated Intangible Folk Cultural Property The nationally designated intangible folk cultural property Genpuku-Shiki Ceremony (Coming of Age Day Ceremony) of Kawamata is held on January 21 at the Kawamata Community Center. It is a ceremony where relatives and local residents celebrate and bless the young men who have reached the age of 20 (formerly 15). A suitable person for each young man is chosen from distant relatives to establish a relationship similar to that of parent and child. After doing so, the young man is acknowledged as an adult by the villagers. This relationship established between the chosen relative and the young man is called the "oyabun-kobun" (master-disciple) relationship and continues throughout their lives. Preserved to this day, there are no other customs similar to this custom of "pseudo-parent-child relationships." |
