Description | National Designated Intangible Folk Cultural Property Gohan-Shiki Ceremony of Hokkoji is one of the powerful events of the forced rice feeding ritual held annually on January 3rd at the Hikarimichi Shrine after the festival takeover of the Hikarimichi shrine. This ritual involves preparing sumptuous offerings with heartfelt sincerity to welcome the deities who visit the human world at designated times, a custom known as forced rice feeding. It involves compelling the participants to consume large quantities of rice, sweet potatoes, sake, and other items at once. The forced rice feeding ritual of Hokkoji preserves ancient customs related to the worship of the sun and serves as a reminder of the vestiges of Nikko Shugendo, aligning with Nikko Rinnouji Temple's practices. According to local oral tradition, this ritual has been performed since the Enbun era (1356-1360). |
