| Description | Chausuyama tumulus is a burial mound built at the tip of a hill, together with Fujiyama tumulus located on the east side across the valley. The hill was built in two stages, and the first stage of the mound is characterized by its broad flat surface. The first level of the mound is 91 m long, and the second level is 66 m long and about 6 m high. The mound is surrounded by a shield-shaped moat (perimeter ditch) and earthwork (perimeter mound), which remain in a well-preserved state. The moat is approximately 20 m wide and 6 m deep at its deepest point. The earthen mound surrounding the outer side of the moat is approximately 5 m wide and 1 to 3 m high. The total length of the burial mound, including the earthen mounds, reaches 140 meters. Chausuyama Kofun was excavated in 1895, and house-shaped haniwa (clay figurines) and human haniwa (clay figurines) were unearthed. Today, Chausuyama tumulus is covered with many trees, but when the tumulus was built, the slopes of the mound and the moat were covered with stones. On the stone-covered mound and earthen mounds, huge haniwa terra-cotta tombs were erected to protect the mound. |
