Designation Date 1976/06/07
Cities / Towns Nakagawa
Description This site first attracted attention in 1940 when the bronze seal "萪□ private seal" (designated as a National Important Cultural Property in 1954, owned by the Tokyo National Museum) was discovered at the site where the current copper seal platform is located. It was initially thought to be a temple, but more than a dozen investigations since 1955 have revealed that it was a government office of Nasu County in ancient times (around 300 to 1,000 years ago).

The area of the government office is at least 200 m north-south and 400 m east-west, and is divided into three blocks by a ditch. The west block has many full-posted, moat-posted buildings thought to be warehouses. The center of the block is unknown, but the east block is thought to be a "county office" with practical functions, as there are many side-post hottate-bashira buildings. In addition, from the south of the east block, there are a total of 35 hottate-bashira buildings and hexagonal buildings, which are very rare in Japan, as well as the remains of hard-hole dwellings, which may have been "kan" or "kuriya" related to "kan".

In the west of the county office and in the south of the central block, a road was found toward the space between the blocks, which is thought to have branched off from Tousan-do (East Mountain Road). On the northern extension of this road are the ruins of Joboji Abandoned Temple, which is extremely interesting when considering the formation of county offices.
