Title The Site of Nasukanda Castle
Designation Date 1984/07/06
Cities / Towns Nakagawa
Description The castle ruins are located in Yougai, Miwa, in the middle of the transition from the right bank terrace of the Naka River to the Kitsuregawa Hills. It is one of the largest in eastern Japan, covering more than 2.5 hectares including the surrounding moat. The site is almost in its original form except for the west side, which is about 10 m wide at the base of the earthwork, 5 m high and 2 m wide at the top of the earthwork, 66 m east to west and 117 m north to south, covering an area of about 7,725 m2. The moat remains to the north and south, and each corner of the earthwork is slightly higher than the other. The inside of the fortress is now covered with rice paddies, and the outside of the east and west earthen mounds are also covered with rice paddies.

There are three theories as to when the castle was built: 1056, 1105, and 1125, but the date has yet to be determined. However, its location near the site of Nasu Kanga(government office), a county office of the Nara and Heian periods located approximately 4 km to the north, and the scale of the office, make it an appropriate place to summarize the region as it has been since ancient times.

The Nasu Clan was the representative clan of Nasu from ancient times to the Middle Ages, and this area is thought to have been their headquarters. It is said that Yoichi Nasu, famous for his role as the target of the fan in the battle of Genpei Yashima, was born at Nasukanda Castle in 1169 as the 11th son of Suketaka Nasu.
