Description | The annual festival at Nikko Toshogu Shrine (celebrated on April 17th according to the old lunar calendar) featured the Togyo-sai procession. This event centered around three portable shrines honoring the Toshogu Three Deities (Toshogu Gongen, Sanno Gongen, and Madara Jinja). The grand procession included soldiers, musicians, shrine personnel, Yamabushi practitioners (mountain ascetics), and monks, involving over a thousand participants. Despite some reduction in the depiction of the number of people, the document is vividly colored and effectively captures the essence of the festival's procession. |
