Description | The artist, Tsubaki Chinzan (1801–1854), a Japanese painter trained under notable artists Tani Bunchō and Watanabe Kazan, was known for his skill in portrait and bird-and-flower paintings. This particular painting showcases four types of flowers, each representing a famous Chinese scholar: the plum symbolizes Lin Bu, the orchid stands for Huang Shangu (Huang Tingjian), the lotus represents Zhou Maoshu, and the chrysanthemum signifies Tao Yuanming. Created during Chinzan's time in Ashikaga, this work is notable for its delicate use of color. Chinzan employed a special technique in which he left out the outlines in parts of the petals and leaves, focusing instead on blending different shades to create a gentle, lifelike appearance. |
