| Description | This is a color painting depicting the battle that took place in Ichinoya, Settsu Province (Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture) during the Genpei War in Juei3(1184). Losing the capital Kyoto in Juei2(1183), Taira clan encamped in the West Sea and advanced to Fukuhara, Settsu Province, encamping in Ichinoya. But they defeated Noriyori and Yoshitsune, two younger brothers of Minamoto no Yoritomo deployed by him and fled to Shikoku. At this time, Tomomasa, Munemasa, Tomomitsu; these three Oyama brothers were under Noriyori’s army. On the lower left of this material, it depicts the single combat between Kumagai Naozane and Taira no Atsumori, which is the climax of ‘Atsumori no Saigo (the Death of Atsumori)’ in “Heike Monogatari”. This anecdote was later featured in several works such as Noh play and a song of Kowaka-mai (dance) “Atsumori” which Oda Nobunaga enjoyed to dance. Utagawa Yoshitora, who is the painter of this material, is a wandering artist who was active during the late Edo period to the mid Meiji period. |
