Description | This is a folding screen picture depicting the performance of Nasu no Yoichi in the battle of Yashima, Sanuki Province (Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture) during the Genpei War in 1185. Yoichi or Munetaka in real name, was born as the 11th child of Nasu Suketaka. Obeying to Minamoto no Yoshitsune, Yoichi participated in suppressing Taira during the Genpei War. During the battle of Yashima, Yoichi received orders from Yoshitsune to shoot down a fan atop the mast of a Taira ship. He successfully shot down the fan at once. On the left side of this folding screen is depicting Yoichi aiming a bow, and Genji’s army with the white flag as a banner. On the right side, there is a small boat with a fan target and a Taira’s military ship with red flags. A fan with a golden Hinomaru painted on the center of the crimson background, and under there stands a beautiful woman of ‘courtesan’ , which is just as described in “Heike Monogatari”. Losing the battle of Yashima, Taira clan was brought to a decisive battle in Dannoura Nagato Province (Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture), but was defeated and exterminated by Minamoto no Yoshitsune’s army. On the other hand, Minamoto no Noriyori’s army in which three Oyama brothers of Tomomasa, Munemasa and Tomomitsu were serving, marched into Aki Province (Hiroshima Prefecture), Suo Province (Yamaguchi Prefecture), and then crossed the sea into Bungo Province (Oita Prefecture). Despite harsh conditions such as lack of provisions, Minamoto no Yoritomo sent a polite letter in recognition of the fact that ‘Each courtier was in the West Sea and achieved great success’.
