| Description | This is a color printing depicting power families forming a consultation under Kamakura-dono also known as Minamoto no Yoritomo. Utagawa Yoshikazu, who is the painter of this material, is a wandering artist who was active during the late Edo period to the early Meiji period. It depicts Minamoto no Yoritomo sitting at the far right and other people involved in Yoritomo. We can see Yoritomo’s younger brothers, Noriyori and Yoshitsune in the center, Hojo Tokimasa, Oe Hiromoto, Adachi (Andachi) Morinaga in the right foreground, Wada Yoshimori and Miura Yoshizumi in the center back, and Kajiwara Kagetoshi located slightly left of center. Among them, six members starting with Tokimasa were powerful families that greatly contributed to the establishment of the Kamakura Shogunate by Yoritomo, and were also selected as members of the 13-member council system that assisted Yoritomo’s son Yoriie, who became the 2nd Shogun after the death of Yoritomo. Samurai groups of Simotsuke such as Oyama, Utsunomiya and Ashikaga clan also greatly contributed to the establishment of the Kamakura Shogunate, and played an important role in the Shogunate. |
