| Description | This is the Shuinjo (trade permit) sent to Nasu Sukeharu and his followers including the Ohtahara clan and the Iono clan by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The Nasu clan is a famous family representing Shimotsuke which had been established in Nasu County (Ohtahara City etc., Tochigi Prefecture). In the Middle Ages, Nasu clan was established as a powerful member of Kamakura Shogunate, and by the Muromachi period, it was considered as one of the most powerful Daimyo (feudal lord) as “Kanto Hachiyagata”. After experiencing division and reunification within families, the Nasu clan cultivated its power as a wartime Daimyo. Under the Nasu clan, Ohtahara clan, Iono clan, Ozeki clan, Fukuhara clan, Senbon clan and Ashino clan were subordinate, called as Nasu-shu. During the Odawara battle, Sukeharu, head of the family, was asked to participate in the battle by Hideyoshi, but did not participate and had a watchful attitude. For this reason, Sukeharu was taken away from his territory by Hideyoshi for his absence from battle. However, due to the hustle and bustle of Nasu-shu, Fujiohmaru(later Sukekage), son of Sukeharu, was allowed to revive the Nasu clan by Hideyoshi in October Tensho18(1590). Although the Nasu clan was once exterminated, it was revived as a Toyotomi Daimyo. According to this Shuinjo, in November Bunroku2(1593), Asano Nagayoshi (later Nagamasa) and his son Yukinaga, one of Gobugyo (five major Toyotomi magistrates) were granted Kai Province (Yamanashi Prefecture) by Hideyoshi. As a result of this, Hideyoshi ordered Nasu Sukeharu and Nasu-shu to be under command of Asano father and son. Eventually, intermediary roles of Hideyoshi and the Nasu clan has been changed from Masuda Nagamori to Asano Nagayoshi. This was the reorganization (“Teyose”) ordered by Hideyoshi. This can be confirmed as this reorganization was carried out to Date Masamune and Utsunomiya Kunitsuna on the same date (“Asano Document”), it indicates that Hideyoshi’s ruling policy of the East Region was slightly changed after the Utsunomiya punishment. |
