| Description | Jin Osakabe (A sketch) 1961 Oil paintings on canvas 112.7 x 145.0 cm Jin Osakabe was born in present-day Tsuga-cho, Tochigi City. While still a student at the Tokyo Fine Arts School, Osakabe made his mark early on by being selected for the Exhibition of the Imperial Fine Arts Academy, and his works were exhibited mainly at the Japan Fine Arts Exhibition and Bunten (an art exhibition sponsored by the Ministry of Education). During this period, under the influence of his teacher Eisaku Wada, Osakabe painted many portraits of nudes and portraits. In 1946, a year after the end of the war, Osakabe’s talent began to bloom as a landscape painter during his sketching trips with the painter Heizo Kanayama. His paintings of landscapes from all over Japan are still loved by many people today. The “Sketch" was painted at Kotoku Ranch in Oku-Nikko. A man is painting in the dazzling early summer sunlight through the trees. This man is Minoru Araki, a painter who accompanied the artist to Nikko and was also a classmate when they were both at the Tokyo Fine Arts School. In the background, grazing cows are depicted, reminding us that this is a ranch. |
