Description | Riichiro Kawashima 1954 Oil painting on canvas 91 x 73 cm Kawashima, who developed his art career by traveling back and forth between France and Japan, often painted maiko (apprentice geisha) from his youth. The maiko paintings of his youth were based on close observation of the models and an attempt to depict their presence and appearance in a realistic manner. Later, Kawashima gradually changed his style through design work and his own research into color. This work was painted during a transitional period in Kawashima's career when he began to move toward abstraction. The entire painting is outlined in bright green, and the red and blue colors of the maiko's kimono stand out well. The tension created by the maiko's dignified expression and the calmness of the scenery of the river cruise in the background creates a sense of stillness and motion in the picture. This is similar to the relationship between the firmly drawn outlines and the colors applied with a fine touch of movement. This work is the culmination of Kawashima's lifelong study, which began in the early days of his career, when he emphasized observation of nature, he traveled to China and the Korean peninsula to learn design and color from architecture, and studied form, color, and attitude toward art from the French master, Henri Matisse. |
