| Description | Toshi Shimizu (Paris at Night) 1926 Oil painting on canvas 88.9 x 116.2 cm Toshi Shimizu who was born in Tochigi City, went to the U.S. by himself at the age of 20 and studied painting there while working. In 1924, after having achieved a certain level of success in the U.S., he finally set his sights on Paris, the capital of art, which had always been a long-cherished dream of his. At the time, Paris was a city that attracted many artists from all over the world. Among them, artists' studios were concentrated in Montparnasse, where rents were low and art schools were nearby. “Paris at Night" depicts a street not far from his studio. The work humorously depicts couples, parents, and children passing by, a drunken man squatting down, and a young boy peering into a restaurant, and it seems as if one can hear many human dramas from the night streets. Even the priest, who is walking leisurely without paying attention to the bustle of the night, has bright red socks peeking out from under his feet, which shows the humor of Toshi. |
