This is a masterpiece drawn by Shimizu Toshi who was born in a village of Shimotsuga County, and went to the U.S. at the age of 20. It depicts the night of New York ChinaTown in the 1920s during the prohibition period, where various human dramas are taking place.
The bus has just arrived at the center of the painting. The musicians are welcoming with a performance. In front of the shop, a couple is choosing the menu. There is something going on in the right hand side. You can see people chasing a fleeing car, which might be a robbery or bilking. Looking at the dark painting, you will notice that it is full of interesting episodes.
On the lower left, a drunkard is sprawling in the street despite the prohibition period, and a policeman is approaching. This creative narrative of Toshiyuki brings laughter.
This style of painting which depicts the daily lives of ordinary people with a full of humor and pesos, can be recognized by the influence of John Sloan and other American Scene painters. Toshiyuki set the basis of his production as “The Sight of the Living People”.
