Description | John Constable (Dedham Vale) c. 1805 – 17 Oil painting on canvas 52.8 x 44.8 cm Constable was an English landscape painter active in the 19th century, and in early 19th century Europe, painting landscapes "for pleasure" rather than as a background for myths or biblical stories was a major innovation. Impressionist painters appearing in France at the end of the 19th century also referred to the British landscape paintings drawn by Constable and others. The “Dedham Valley" depicts the landscape of Constable's hometown in eastern England. Below is a plain and the Stour River meanders through the center of the plain. The town of Dedham can be seen at the end of the river. The tower in the center of the image is the church of Dedham, and next to it is the elementary school that Constable attended. This view overlooking the school route was a favorite of Constable's, and he painted it over and over again, changing the composition. The composition of this work is strongly influenced by the historical landscapes of Claude Lorrain, who was active in the 17th-century in France. |
