| Description | Joseph Mallord William Turner C 1840-50 Oil painting on canvas 88.5 x 118 cm Along with Constable, Turner is one of the most famous English landscape painters of the 19th century. He showed a talent for painting landscapes from an early age, and by the time he was 14 years old, his talent was already recognized enough to be admitted to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. He achieved success at a young age, becoming a full member of the Royal Academy at the age of 26. Turner's aim was to depict the "sublime" of nature, and he aimed to create landscapes that would have the same emotional impact on the viewer as his historical paintings. “Landscape: Woman with Tambourine” is one of his last oil paintings, based on a book of prints entitled Liber Studiorum, which was published in 1807. In the prints he made in his thirties, he depicted even the branches and leaves of the trees in great detail. The radiant light that seems to shine through the entire image is a style the artist attained late in life. |
