Title Fūjin and Raijin Statue (Gods of wind and thunder)
Cities / Towns Nikko
Owner / Manager Rinnoji Temple
Description In 1636, the 21st death anniversary of Tokugawa Ieyasu, Nikko Toshogu was reconstructed on a large scale by the third shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu, and the Yomeimon gate was built instead of the previous gate. “Fūjin and Raijin Statue'' was the statue that was placed on the backside between Yōmeimon Gate at that time, which is also said to be made by Daibusshi (master sculptor) Kouon.
In accordance with the government order of separating Buddhist and Shinto institutions after the Meiji restoration, the statue was moved to present-day Rinnōji and placed in a space beside the Nitenmon Gate of Taiyuin. (It is currently preserved and open to the public in Rinnōji, with its replica placed in Nitenmon.)
It is a valuable cultural resource that conveys the historical changes of Buddhism and Shinto, the traditional values of Japanese religious view as well as Nikkozan, not to mention the value of the statue itself.
