Title | Colored Wooden panel painting of Shodo Shonin(Saint Shodo) |
Cities / Towns | Nikko |
Owner / Manager | Rinnoji Temple |
Description | It represents the image of Shodo in a single painting, and is an essential example of Shodo’s portrait dating back to the Kamakura period along with “Colored Wooden panel painting of Shodo Shonin” (National Important Cultural Properties) which is also preserved in Rinnōji. Although it is hard to see the image due to a large dry crack near the center of the screen, a large defect in the lower part, and denigration by aging, a powerful brushwork of ink line can be seen. Shodo, facing to the right, sits on a chair with Nenju (Prayer beads) Vajra (Indian ritualistic weapon) in his left hand. At the bottom of the screen, 3 coats of clothing, water bottles and shoes are drawn. His face is severely frowned upon, and the wrinkles on his forehead are tense. The large arc-shaped wrinkles and long drooping eyebrows show the appearance of his old age, and his thickly closed mouth and the sharpness of his double bottom eyelids are filled with dignity as the founder of Nikko kaizan. From the ink inscription on the back, it is apparent to be brought to Amamoriyado (Eastern foot of Mt. Taro), one of the shukubo lodgings for ascetic practices of Nikko nyubu (entering a mountain) by Gonrisshi Shouzen in 1325, and repaired in 1448. |
