Description Colophon primosi is one of the very rare stag beetles in the world.
It is characterized by the male’s thick, orange mandibles.
This species is found in the Swartberg mountains in the Republic of South Africa. This species is living in rocky areas with very few grass at elevations of 1,500 to 2,000 meters, while larvae grow feeding on plants buried in the soil.
Adults have degenerated underwings and so are unable to fly, making it impossible for them to travel long distances. They seem to have evolved in their own particular way in isolated locations.
This species is protected as an endangered species in the Republic of South Africa, and it is prohibited to take them out of the country.
