Description | KOSUGI, Hoan ca. 1900 Watercolor on paper 51 x 34 cm Hoan Kosugi (also known as Misei) was from Nikko and studied Western-style painting under Bunsai Ioki, a popular artist known for his souvenir paintings of Nikko. This piece is from the period when he was studying under Ioki, meticulously painting the scenery of Nikko in watercolor, just as his teacher did. When Kosugi earned some income by selling his work as souvenir paintings, he would go out drinking, without his teacher’s knowledge. When he was chided for his actions, he defiantly replied, “I’m not sober from drinking yet,” and began using the name Misei Kosugi, with “Misei” meaning “not sober yet.” |
