Description | AOKI, Shigeru Portrait of Sachihiko 1907 oil on canvas Aoki Shigeru was born in present-day Kurume City, Fukuoka Prefecture. In 1899 (Meiji 32), he moved to Tokyo and enrolled in painting school called “Fudousha”. Following year, he enrolled in the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of the Arts) and studied under Kuroda Seiki. At the painting school “Fudousha”, he formed a close bond with Fukuda Tane, who is from Hagamachi City, Ibaraki Prefecture, and they deepened their friendship by embarking on sketching trips with other companions. It's said that Tane's figure is depicted in one of Aoki's notable works, "Fruits of the Sea" (held by the Artizon Museum). Eventually, Aoki and Tane, who became lovers, had a son together. This child is depicted in the artwork " Portrait of Sachihiko." At the time, Sachihiko, who was three years old, is shown with a pacifier in his mouth. Aoki delicately applied a touch of red paint to his son's chubby cheeks, enhancing the adorable innocence of young Sachihiko. However, shortly after completing this piece, Aoki received news of his father's critical condition and returned to his hometown, leaving Tane and young Sachihiko behind. Aoki then passed away in a hospital in Fukuoka without ever returning to his child. Continuing the artistic legacy of Aoki Shigeru and Fukuda Tane, Sachihiko later became known as a musician under the name Fukuda Randou. |
