| Description | This site is the remains of a large settlement from the early Jomon Period, and was excavated in 1986 and 1987 prior to the construction of a cemetery in the Utsunomiya Municipal Cemetery. As a result, it was confirmed that the village consisted of a group of 339 graves in the center of the plaza, surrounded by a ring of special buildings, including many pit dwellings, large rectangular buildings, square buildings, and dug-out column buildings. The 15 large rectangular buildings are one of the most distinctive features of this site, and are unique for their length (14-24m) and standardized structure. In addition, a number of very large pit dwellings with a length of over 8 m, six main pillars, and many furnaces, which were frequently rebuilt, were also found. The remains of a square building consisted of four main pillars arranged in a square shape and surrounded by rows of round-cornered square post holes in a ditch-like pattern. It is similar in structure to a large rectangular building, but its size corresponds to that of an ordinary pit dwelling. Like the large rectangular building, this building has never been found before in Japan. Among the many graves in the plaza, seven graves with stone tools designated as important cultural properties were found. The seven gravesites with lithic artifacts designated as important cultural properties are valuable materials in clarifying the conditions of individuals and their burial posture at that time. This site has a group of buildings with special structures and sizes around the tombs, which were frequently rebuilt. The fact that few everyday items have been excavated suggests the possibility that a group ritual, such as a funerary rite, may have been held at the site. Currently, the site has been developed as "Utsunomiya Site Plaza," where four reconstructed houses and a museum are located, and is crowded with many visitors. |
